Pasadena is an increasingly diverse community where education and economic opportunity are high priorities. The Pasadena Independent School District’s mission is nothing less than to guarantee all students will acquire the knowledge, master the skills and maximize the talents necessary to fulfill their potential as responsible citizens in the 21st century. Capitalizing on an experienced superintendent and Board of Trustees, the District was named the National Model School District for 2008 by the International Center for Leadership and Education. It was also recently named to the Texas Education Agency's 2011 list of Recognized District achievers, a rating higher than two out of three districts and campuses of the 9,754 evaluated.
Even more targeted for employers are the contributions being made by the San Jacinto College District. With three campuses, seven extension centers and numerous outreach programs, San Jacinto College has established a track record of successfully identifying and fulfilling the workforce training needs of area industries. The organization has collaborated with a variety of local employers to focus educational efforts on their hiring and training requirements. The College also offers transfer programs with guaranteed admissions to many Texas four-year universities for students seeking an associate’s degree with the goal of moving on to a bachelor’s or graduate degree.
The University of Houston at Clear Lake provides another major educational resource for residents and businesses, offering undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees in a range of academic and applied disciplines.
Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program
SATOP, administered by the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership, is a State of Texas funded initiative designed to transfer the knowledge and technology of the U.S. Space Program to the private sector. Small business owners faced with a technical challenge can receive up to 40 hours of free assistance from a scientist or engineer with expertise in acoustical, chemical, electrical, environmental, manufacturing, materials, mechanical, structural, and a host of other technical disciplines. Since 1999, SATOP-Texas has solved more than 600 technical challenges, created or maintained more than 500 jobs, and infused more than $125 million into the state’s economy.
The assistance provided by SATOP’s Alliance Partners has proven to be invaluable to the many small businesses that have benefited from it. The Alliance Partners benefit, as well, knowing that they have made a positive contribution to these businesses and the people they serve around the world.
